ABSTRACT

An example of obscure backing is roofing that runs up a high parapet wall. When roofing is run more than about three or four feet (this varies by specific roofing product line) vertically, it will often need to be held up with mechanical fasteners. These mechanical fasteners will require backing. Because this is not a common occurrence on projects, framing subcontractors often will not know to anticipate it. Consequently, the framing subcontractor may easily overlook this backing. If such backing was overlooked during bidding, the framing subcontractor will almost certainly submit a change order for this work. They will contend that this work is not intuitive and should have been specifically shown on the architectural drawings.
