ABSTRACT

A 6-week-old baby boy with a known diagnosis of ventricular septal defect (VSD) presents with a 1-day history of respiratory distress. The baby was born at 36 weeks of gestation by spontaneous vaginal delivery to a healthy 25-year-old, G1P1 mother. Prenatal ultrasound and fetal echocardiography had identified a VSD, but no other congenital anomalies. Cardiology evaluation after birth concluded that the VSD was hemodynamically insignificant and observation was recommended. A chest x-ray done prior to hospital discharge, on the 4th day of life, was normal as shown in Figure 11.1.
