ABSTRACT

A 2-month-old baby boy is sent by his pediatrician to be evaluated for a right scrotal swelling. The baby was born by spontaneous vaginal delivery at 40 weeks of gestation. Second and third trimester prenatal ultrasounds did not detect any congenital anomalies. The baby has been asymptomatic since birth and is feeding and growing normally. A moderate swelling was first noted on the routine 2-week well-baby examination and was diagnosed as a hydrocele. The patient's mother feels that it has enlarged and has requested an earlier surgical evaluation. On specific questioning during the visit, the mother relates that the swelling does not fluctuate in size and that there has never been a groin swelling.
