ABSTRACT

A newborn baby girl is brought to the emergency room at 1 week of age because of a mass noted at the umbilicus. The mother underwent a home vaginal delivery at term, assisted by a midwife. The mass looked like a large wet navel at birth but has become more swollen during the two days prior to presentation. It has been bleeding easily and some foul-smelling discharge has been noticed. The mother recalls a small “cyst” seen at the umbilicus on fetal ultrasound. The baby has been urinating and stooling normally and is otherwise asymptomatic. Physical examination shows a well-appearing female neonate with a stoma-like lesion at the umbilicus as shown in Figure 20.1. Probing the lesion with a sterile Q-tip leads to a 1-cm long blind end.
