ABSTRACT

On screening at 19 weeks of gestation, an 18-year-old, Hispanic, G1P0, healthy woman is found to have an elevated maternal serum alpha fetoprotein level at 9.76 MoM (multiples of the median). Subsequent fetal ultrasound performed at 22 weeks of gestation, shown in Figure 21.1, identifies a female fetus with an abdominal wall defect and herniated bowel to the right of the umbilicus. A diagnosis of gastroschisis is made and the patient is sent to you for prenatal consultation.
