ABSTRACT

A 6-year-old boy, with no significant past medical history, presents to the emergency department after passing large amounts of fresh red blood per rectum. Three episodes occurred over 12 hours and were not associated with vomiting, abdominal pain, or constipation. Evaluation in the emergency department reveals a comfortable child in no distress. His heart rate is 135 beats per minute, and his blood pressure is 85/50 mm HG. Respiratory rate, temperature, and oxygen saturation are normal. His abdomen is non-tender, non-distended, and without any palpable masses. Frank red blood is found on rectal examination.
