ABSTRACT

A 10-year-old, African-American boy presents to the emergency department with a 6-day history of watery diarrhea and abdominal pain. He was seen 3 days previously, diagnosed with viral gastroenteritis, and discharged from the emergency department. In the last 48 hours, his abdominal pain gradually increased, he developed anorexia, he had 3 episodes of non-bilious emesis, and his diarrhea persisted. He has also had persistent fevers of 38.0°C–39.0°C.
