ABSTRACT

Law enforcement in the United States comes in many di erent shapes and sizes. ere are federal agencies that employ thousands of agents and support sta . State agencies also have from hundreds to thousands of employees. In addition to state troopers or highway patrol o¢cers, there are state rangers and other state level agencies. Next, we get to county level law enforcement, such as county sheri ’s departments or county police departments. ere are tribal police agencies and local or municipal authorities as well. County agencies may also have a wide-ranging n umber of o¢cers. Some municipal law enforcement agencies may be as small as a handful of o¢cers, but may also be thousands strong, as in the case of the New York City Police, or the Los Angeles Police. Whatever the size, there are certain common denominators regarding these law enforcement agencies. Each provides a core set of basic training to recruits and transferring veterans. Given the great variety of law enforcement options available to society, it would seem that we should have much lower crime rates.
