ABSTRACT

It should be noted that mobile phone interfaces (as well as many other interfaces) are the work of a team of people who may not directly work together (independent software developers, original-equipment manufacturers), and that many of these usability issues may be the direct result of this lack of integration. For example, the specific e-mail application discussed in this chapter may have been developed by an independent software company (“third party”) to be installed on many different handset models from many different carriers, and each model can vary in button layout and placement; thus the recommendations may range from specific to general, so as to make them widely applicable.
