ABSTRACT

Vision We are surrounded by visual displays from the moment we wake up each day. Consider my typical day. When I awoke, the first thing I saw was my digital alarm clock. When I drove to work, I was surrounded by glowing visual displays in my car. The instrument cluster itself is a display of information, but my car also has small liquid crystal monitors to display additional information such as mileage, time, temperature, and average miles per gallon, navigational maps, or radio stations. When I arrived at work, I sat down in front of my dual-monitor setup, which is the most obvious display. However, as I looked around, there were other displays such as my mobile phone and the caller ID display on my office phone. The purpose of each of these displays was to convey information, and each required varying amounts of my attention.
