ABSTRACT

Cognition Cognitive requirements may be the most often overlooked variable in display design. This is likely due to two reasons. First, the cognitive effects of an interface on behavior do not appear as measurable as perceptual effects; a person can easily state that they cannot read text due to visual acuity, but cannot easily explain why a set of hierarchical menus is confusing. Second, we have observed that when a display is poorly designed for cognition, users tend to blame themselves rather than the interface. Yet designing a display that fits the mind as well as the eye, ear, or hand is crucial to user success with that display.
