ABSTRACT

Older adults in the user-centered design process A central tenet of good usability testing is to incorporate users into the design and evaluation process. It may not always be possible to include older users in the design process (although it is highly recommended), but at the very least their input should be obtained during the evaluation process. This chapter will discuss some ways that information about the capabilities, limitations, and needs of older adults can be collected and used in the user-centered design and evaluation lifecycle. We assume that the reader is familiar with user-centered design concepts and usability; hence, this chapter will focus on ways in which existing usability methods and techniques can be adapted for use with older users. More information on the general topic of usability and usability testing can be found in the recommended readings section at the end of this chapter.
