ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces two of the most popular platforms for numerical computation, MATLAB and (the very similar and free) Octave.
MATLAB (which stands for “matrix laboratory”) is a programming language as well as an environment for scientific computing, published and sold by the software company MathWorks. MATLAB, commonly used for data analysis, is featured in many numerical analysis textbooks at the undergraduate and graduate level.
