ABSTRACT

Urban conflicts related to water use usually highlight problems of significant social, economic and environmental importance, particularly those relating to:

i) environmental health problems associated with pollution of water bodies and long-term degradation of strategic water basins,

ii) illegal occupation of environmentally vulnerable areas by communities where infrastructure and waste management systems are inadequate,

iii) ineffective water resource management systems, and iv) lack of access to water of sufficient quality for different uses (domestic, commer-

cial and industrial).
