ABSTRACT
In recent years, an unusual number of extreme events have occurred throughout the world, either due to anthropogenic activities, climate change or a combination of causes. Although widespread media coverage and internet use may create the impression that such events are more numerous than in actuality, it is also increasingly apparent that the frequency of occurrence and the magnitudes of flows have actually increased significantly.
