ABSTRACT

Hamid* žrst arrived at Camp Bucca at the end of August 2005. In his žrst week, he had a basic education evaluation where his literacy, language, and math skills were found to be at a primary school level. When the opportunity presented itself for him to participate in education classes, he readily volunteered. In 2007, he began attending a number of classes both at the intracompound schools and at formal schools. What he learned motivated him and, in 2008, he asked to be trained as a literacy and math tutor for his compound peers. He also started participating in other group activities provided by the military. As he strengthened his knowledge through the process of teaching his peers, he grew more conždent in his ability to learn and grow intellectually. At his release, he asked to present the commander with his written story.
