ABSTRACT

India and China are at the bottom of human community in terms of the socioeconomic state, which is almost like a wine glass, as shown in Figure 8.1. They constitute the dominant component of the backward community of humanity, each about 20%. India faces an enormous challenge of develop ment. Management of the environment will be one of the most important components of the activities because in the last analysis, humanity depends on the environment. Indeed, society and the environment are one integral component, as the Indian sages discovered long ago and as modern science has rediscovered. An integrated societal-environmental systems manage ment has to be undertaken, as modern science puts it. Advances have been made in the area leading to new concepts, technologies, policies, and man agement (Chaturvedi 2011a). The current activities have to be revolutionized in these terms.
