ABSTRACT

Two-dimensional (2D) retaining wall model tests and the corresponding elastoplastic finite element analyses were carried out to investigate the influences of the wall deflection process and wall deflection mode on the earth pressures developed and the ground movements. In the first series (series I), the influence of wall deflection on the earth pressure behind the retaining wall and the ground movement in active and passive states is discussed. In the second series (series II), the influence of deflection mode of the wall is discussed in the active state. Although only 2D retaining wall problems are discussed here, a more detailed report on experimental and numerical results including 3D effects can be found in Iwata et al. (2007).
