ABSTRACT

India and Bangladesh, the latter formerly being East Pakistan, have a historical, cultural, and political identity that is based on environmental integrity. The partition of British India in 1947, on the basis of Hindu or Muslim majority, into India and Pakistan shattered this comprehensive integrity. Conflicts were the natural aftermath. With the partition of land and water, environmental conflicts continue. The central point is the issue of waters of River Ganges, with focus on the Farakka Barrage in its many facets.
