ABSTRACT

There are numerous reasons why deranged suspects engage in an active shooter attack. Whether due to mental illness, the loss of a job, a perceived injustice, political motivations, or other causes, these suspects all have one goal: to kill and injure as many victims as possible before being stopped by authorities. Several active shooters appear to have reviewed the strengths and weaknesses of previous attacks carefully in an attempt to increase the number of people who are killed. This careful planning has led to attacks that dramatically increase the complexity of the events and make effective law enforcement response much more difficult.
