ABSTRACT

This chapter builds on the preanesthetic medication drugs discussed in Chapter 2 and describes this IV anesthetic drugs used for induction of anesthesia and endotracheal intu - bation prior to inhalant anesthesia maintenance (109). This chapter also covers the use of IV agents for short-term anesthesia maintenance. IV injection techniques are also described and the characteristics of each injectable anesthetic drug or drug combination are outlined. (IV injectable combinations using medetomidine and dexmedetomidine are discussed in Chapter 9. CRIs of analgesic therapies are discussed in Chapter 12.)

INTRAVENOUS ANESTHETIC AGENTS • IV anesthetic agents can be used in dogs and

cats for inducing anesthesia prior to endotracheal intubation and maintenance with inhalant agents. They can also be used as a single bolus, as repeated intermittent boluses, or by CRI for short-term chemical restraint or injectable anesthesia.
