ABSTRACT

Rice husk and rice bran are the two main by-products of the rice milling industry. Several valuable chemicals and other products have been produced from rice husk, but their commercial success has yet to be established. Commercially, rice bran is the most valuable by-product, obtained from the outer layers of the brown rice. Generally, rice bran consists of pericarp, aleurone layer, germ, and a part of endosperm. Bran removal amounts from 4% to 9% of the weight of paddy milled. True bran amounts from 4% to 5% only; rest is polish consisting of inner bran layers and portion of the starchy endosperm. Rice bran is characterized by its high fat and protein contents. It also contains vitamins, minerals, and many other useful chemicals.
