ABSTRACT

RVHT is a form of secondary hypertension resulting from activation of pressor mechanisms due to renal ischemia. Although RVHT is caused by critical stenosis of the renal artery, the presence of renal arterial disease is not synonymous with RVHT. It is possible to detect renal artery stenosis in normotensive people where hypofusion from the stenosis is not severe. Although RVHT is an uncommon cause of hypertension in the general population, it is important that it is identified, as this cause of hypertension can be cured in some instances.
