ABSTRACT

Botanical Miracles: Chemistry of Plants That Changed the World is a platform to present an educational journey and to supplement and extend the teaching curriculum by providing context for learning in organic chemistry. The book is intended to inspire, enhance and enrich an inquiring mind through a multidisciplinary approach; embracing science, medicine, the natural environment, geography and history (Figure 1.1). Through examples of well-known plants and modern scientic miracles, the book tells the stories of key natural products and their extracts with emphasis upon sources, applications and science. These extracts are today associated with important drugs, nutrition products, beverages, perfumes, cosmetics and pigments. The book is written for those chemistry students who are in the upper age groups at high school or at early university level.
