ABSTRACT

Today, the concept of terahertz (THz) radiation is widely investigated because of its numerous application prospects in both pure and applied sciences. A detailed examination of three different kinds of methods to produce THz radiation through laser-plasma interaction, namely THz generation through laser-wakefield oscillations in plasma, THz generation in plasma with density perturbations, and THz generation through nonlinear effects in plasma, is done in this chapter. Another method for THz emission using field effect transistors is also discussed. The important techniques to detect THz radiations such as photoconductive detection, electro-optic detection, THz detection using sum-frequency generation in nonlinear crystals, and THz detection using air-biased coherent detection are discussed. In addition, the absorption processes of dielectrics and the properties of artificial materials in the THz regime are also introduced.
