ABSTRACT

Fungal ocular infections, principally mycotic keratitis and conjunctivitis, are common in the tropics, as compared with temperate climates. Some (Lasiodiplodia theobromae, Colletotrichum species) are unique to tropical and subtropical regions (1). This chapter highlights important aspects of the ophthalmomycoses, with emphasis on the problems experienced in tropical countries. Actinomycetales (Actinomyces, Nocardia), although branching Gram-positive bacteria, and not fungi, are also considered since they are important causes of tropical ocular infections.
