ABSTRACT

The idea of globilization is now giving way to the idea of global tensions as protest mounts at the gross inequalities within and between countries. One important tension is between the global system, organized through the United Nations (UN) for the realization of human rights, and the global system, organized through business corporations and business associations for the realization of corporate profits. The human-rights system treats people as ends in themselves, valued simply because they are human beings. The corporate profits system treats people as instruments for making money, valued through a financial calculus of profit and loss.
