ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a popular temple, CSDY, in Chisong, which is managed by a Taiwanese woman who has extensive business experience in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Zhejiang. Unlike YYY and Zugong, which are rather quiet most of the time, CSDY has a renao or literally lively atmosphere. The design and layout of the temple as a spectacular park attracts different domestic visitors seeking both sacred as well as secular activities during their leisure time, for example, praying, hiking, family outings, BBQ, camping and taking bridal photographs. Similarly, the provincial cadres thought that there were too many temples of Huang Daxian (HDX) being built or revived in the 1990s. The actual construction of CSDY was conducted by Hong Kong Chisong HDX Limited company, which included two key members, Ms Luo and Mr Chow. Various kinds of religious services are offered in CSDY. These services generate additional reasons for people to come to the temple.
