ABSTRACT

Japan is one of the most highly forested nations in the world, with a woodland covering of around 70 per cent of the total land mass; of this, 40 per cent consists of plantations (Fujiwara 2002: 10), of which 31 per cent is national forest, 11 per cent is held by local governments, and 58 per cent is privately owned (Iwai, Y. 2002: xiv).
