ABSTRACT
The previous chapter of this book provided a theoretical foundation for event regeneration. This chapter provides a historical foundation. Understanding the history of the relationship between events and regeneration helps us to better understand the present. Accordingly, the discussion in this chapter outlines a chronology of event strategies to help explain current event regeneration approaches. It is impossible to trawl through the entire history of event projects, so key projects are picked out and discussed. The chapter is supported by a timeline that summarises some of the critical moments and key turning points (see Figure 3.1).
