ABSTRACT

In the first chapters of this book, the relationship between events and regeneration was discussed and a theoretical/historical foundation for the book was provided. The next five chapters are dedicated to different aspects of event regeneration as identified in Chapter 1. These include the use of events within wider strategies to regenerate cities (Chapter 5), social regeneration in conjunction with events (Chapter 6), events as ways of marking and instigating new directions for cities (Chapter 7) and their use as tools for assisting tourism development (Chapter 8). This chapter focuses on the most basic form of event regeneration – that associated with venue projects. To stage major events cities tend to develop new venues. This is principally something associated with sport events, although new theatres, museums and exhibition spaces have also been constructed in conjunction with many cultural events. World Expos are slightly different in that they have traditionally been staged in temporary buildings and structures. However, permanent facilities and buildings are now more common (Rollin, 2008).
