ABSTRACT

A closer examination within this chapter will reveal the processes and methodology of assessing bilingual learner’s language competences and common learning outcomes which would link into the GNVQ core skills. The six core skills used by most colleges approximate as closely as possible to the National Curriculum Council (NCC) publication ‘Core Skills’ (1990) and are a set of transferable skills considered central to academic, vocational and personal development with an emphasis on processes/abilities as follows:

• communication; • problem-solving; • personal skills (working independently and working with others); • numeracy; • information technology; and • a modern language.
