ABSTRACT

In 1981 the politically astute Bernard Atha (see Chapter 8 in this volume) was not reappointed as a joint Vice-Chairman of the Council and was replaced by Ian Mc.Callum3 whose background in sport was minimal and who was quite unknown to the sports confraternity. A year later John Disley (see Appendix 4 in this volume), the other Vice-Chairman was not reappointed and here the Sports Council lost its most knowledgeable member who had served for the most part

from 1965. These were grievous losses for sport and pointed to an underlying unease at political involvement.
