ABSTRACT

Wolfenden in 1960 saw very clearly the aspirations of indivduals to take part in sport when he and his Committee argued that man must not only work but must play. This view has been reflected by many sociologists over the last thirty years, some of whom go further and believe that sport has a considerable influence both on society as a whole and on social relationships. In simple terms sport not only reflects the society in which we live, its attitudes, its values, its ethos, but it also helps condition it.
