ABSTRACT
In the previous chapter we have talked about differences between medical, legal, and social perspectives on the definition of mental disorder, on appropriate responses to that disorder, and particularly on when compulsion should be applied. We described how the balance between these perspectives was altered by the 1959 Act, which placed most of the major decisions in the realms of medical judgment.
