ABSTRACT
Throughout history, the military has viewed the environment as a tool to be used to deny resources to the enemy and as a potent weapon. In recent years, “environmental warfare” (defined by the leading authority on warfare and the environment, Arthur Westing, as “the manipulation of the environment for hostile military purposes”) was carried out extensively by the US forces in Vietnam.1
