ABSTRACT
From the arguments and illustrations put forward in these Studies it will be clear that in my view classical historiography is different from its modern namesake because it is primarily a rhetorical genre and is to be classified (in modern terms) as literature rather than as history. But since the mere expression of this view involves questions of definition and nomenclature, some further clarification is perhaps called for.
