ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to develop children’s understanding of the aetiology and the cognitive and behavioural impact on an individual living with Attention Disorder. It aims to define the terms Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Hyperkinetic Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder. The chapter outlines two approaches in the classification of ADHD (DSM-V and ICD-10) and the similarities and differences between the two systems. It presents some of the characteristics associated with the core features of inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. The chapter utilises research findings to evaluate the standing of the role of genetics on ADHD. It also utilises research findings to evaluate the standing of the role of neurobiology on ADHD. The chapter examines the role of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine. It discusses cognitive theories relating to ADHD, including executive functioning. The chapter explores the importance of environmental risk factors in the development of ADHD. It describes the suggestion that ADHD is a Social Construct.
