ABSTRACT

The numbers of pupils seen in inclusive classrooms with chromosomal and gestational issues have risen in inclusive classrooms. Chromosomal conditions can be caused by Changes in the number of chromosomes. This chapter examines the causes, characteristics and strategies to support individuals with Fragile X syndrome (FXS), Down’s syndrome (DS), Cri du chat syndrome and foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). It aims to describe the causes of the following chromosomal and gestational diversities: FXS, DS, Cri du chat syndrome and FAS. The chapter provides the features of such diversities. It discusses the similarities and differences between FXS and Autism Spectrum Disorder. The chapter explains the moral and ethical dilemma associated with prenatal testing for DS. It outlines classroom support strategies for pupils living with FXS, DS Cri du chat syndrome and FAS. DS is a congenital condition caused by chromosomal disorder in which an error in cell division results in an extra copy of chromosome 21 in the baby’s cell.
