ABSTRACT

Anyone working in the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) context will no doubt be familiar with the legislation and range of policies which derive from these and are then used to underpin practice. This chapter outlines some of the key reports, acts and codes of practice relevant to the area of SEND. It describes the impact that these had on the professional practice. The chapter reviews the role of Ofsted in the inspection of professional practice, with particular reference to outcomes for SEND pupils and local area SEND inspections. It analyses the importance of the SEND Code of Practice. The chapter examines the implications of differing contexts, the importance of the local offer and the implications of the Graduated Response and Education, Health and Care Plans deriving from the SEND Code of Practice. There are opportunities too for analysis of others’ views of SEND Provision, for example, whole staff professional development audits and parent questionnaires.
