ABSTRACT

The process for obtaining a job and the tools to use are varied. This chapter presents some of the more traditional and widely used job search processes and tools. During the job observation and research step of the journey, one can find out the job by reading, searching databases, searching the internet, and hopefully conducting some nonintrusive and non-interactive observing. This can be done as part of college coursework. For instance, in a professional development, fieldwork, service learning, or capstone course, they could have some observation assignments that offer the opportunity to observe their career of interest. The chapter describes one hypothetical path to obtaining a career and gainful employment. By describing some of the tools one can create/use to aid them in obtaining a job. The chapter examines various types of methods for getting some job experience. The methods for getting some job experience are job shadowing, volunteering, obtaining an internship, and actual jobs.
