ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the rationale for the Enhancing Parenting Skills (EPaS) progamme, describes some of the problems associated with focusing primarily on problem behaviour and sets out the tasks for the final EPaS session. Most parents are motivated to do the best for their children and many families do this well without help. Others can be helped without the level of intervention and support that is provided through the EPaS programme. The EPaS approach was developed from evidence-based principles and strategies that have helped many parents of children with developmental and/or behavioural challenges to develop new skills and competencies and to replace some of their own and their children’s less adaptive behaviours with effective and pro-social behaviours. The EPaS programme has taken I. Goldiamond's work and successfully adapted it for work with children and families. The EPaS intervention is concluded when the initial contract goals or modified goals have been achieved.
