ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of Andrew. Andrew was 3 years old and his night-time behaviour was a major problem for his parents. Andrew’s parents agreed to a plan to teach him more acceptable ways of behaving at bedtime and during the night. When Andrew was 3 years, 6 months, his parents asked for help. Andrew parents had lived in a one-bedroom flat, so he had always slept in the same room with them. Andrew’s parents kept records over eight nights, which showed that they were lying with him for, on average, 47 minutes each night before he fell asleep. The plan was discussed in detail before commencement and Andrew’s parents were prepared for the fact that Andrew’s initial response would probably be challenging. Having a very structured plan made it possible for Andrew’s parents to approach the situation calmly and explain to him in advance what the new system involved and what his rewards would be.
