ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of Steven. Steven was 11 and had difficulty getting up in the morning and it was getting worse. His mum nagged and shouted at him, not only when he remained upstairs, but also when he came down. Steven’s mum knew that something needed to change, and keeping records of what was happening helped her to identify the problem more clearly. Steven’s mum agreed to ask Steven only once to get up and not to call or nag him. She also agreed to smile and say something pleasant when he came down, regardless of how long he had taken in getting up. On day one, following the usual routine, first Steven’s dad woke him, then his mum, on her way downstairs, said good morning to him and asked him to get up. Steven took 55 minutes to get downstairs.
