ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of Lucy. Lucy was 6 years old. Her parents were concerned that she ate very few foods. The first step in the plan was to arrange for her parents to eat with Lucy and to let Lucy have the foods she liked. Her parents talked with her about things unrelated to food – what they had been doing during the day or what they might do after the meal was over, for example – and they gave Lucy attention for appropriate behaviour. Another way that her parents helped Lucy was to let her prepare and help cook the food. This gave her another reason for wanting to try it: to taste the results of her own efforts. With these gradual changes in the way that Lucy’s parents approached her eating problems, which took place over several months, they helped her to eat and enjoy many foods that she had previously rejected.
