ABSTRACT

The Personal Development and Health Questionnaire (PDHQ) is a brief interview guide. Whilst it is important for families to know that they only need to share information about which they feel comfortable, it is helpful to start with the family and child’s history – finding out who lives in the house, children’s names and ages, how long they have lived there, etc. The PDHQ was originally developed as a research tool but the shortened version contains only the most relevant questions about the child and family history and circumstances. It can be helpful to find out who else has contact with the child. The Parent–Child Constructional Questionnaire will give general practitioners information that will help them to start identifying the functions of problematic behaviours, realistic replacement goals and family assets and skills that build a picture of family functioning, and will contribute to solutions. In asking about background information, general practitioners are showing genuine interest in the parent.
