ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the opportunities offered by the internet, the threats of the internet: cyber-bullying, gaming, pornography, grooming and sexual harassment, and internet addiction, and how parents can help young people stay safe on-line. The challenges of the digital world bring up key authority issues in the relationship between parent and teenager. Some teenagers go through a stage when they want to keep their parents as far away as possible. Having outlined some of the opportunities for young people that are afforded by the internet, it is time to turn to the threats. The surest way to protect a teenager from the risks of pornography is to be aware of what is happening to them, and to make it safe for them to talk to you about sex. Grooming is the term used to describe the behaviour of a predator who targets young people on-line to get them to meet off-line for the purpose of sex.
