ABSTRACT

There are conventional and alternative approaches to assessment that can be combined into a rich contemporary assessment framework that supports learning intervention. In terms of student learning, assessment is any opportunity that a learner has to demonstrate learning. There are many ways in which this is done in responsive teaching and educational casework. Generally, assessment is a response to questioning or some stimulus material through a range of processes, such as brief or extended oral or written language, graphic representations, creative products and performances, or selection from pre-prepared responses. Such activities can occur in class, in small groups, in large groups across multiple settings, or as part of individual interviews. Assessment can be an extended process perhaps taking place over a number of weeks for writing an essay or observation in class over a term, or can be short and sharp like an hour-long exam or a ten-minute performance.
