ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the devices of diacope, epizeuxis, antimetabole, and scesis onomaton. Diacope is the repetition of a word or phrase after an intervening word or phrase. Epizeuxis is the repetition of a word or short phrase. Antimetabole is the repetition of words in reverse order, as in “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. Scesis onomaton involves repetition of an idea by using a string of synonyms. Style Check 13 discusses the power of the strategy of presenting ideas in the order of increasing vividness. Define Your Terms asks students to define each of the rhetorical devices discussed in the chapter and to provide their own examples of each one. It’s in the Cloud asks students to research Cicero and explain his contribution to classical rhetoric. Salt and Pepper 13 challenges students to write several different sentences using the same metaphor.
