ABSTRACT

Ben Pasternak is a young Australian entrepreneur who some believe might be the ‘next Mark Zuckerberg’. In 2014 he was a year 9 student at a private school in inner Sydney. Developing a narrative of each of the young people’s digital lives encouraged identification of the institutions, resources and significant others that were influential in their early years online and how these experiences and interactions manifest in their current digital practices. One of the most influential discourses in shaping both popular and academic conceptions of young people and digital media is that of the ‘digital native’. Cybersafety programmes tend to focus on developing people’s skills to manage and control their ‘digital footprint’, or the data trails and traces they leave behind when using digital media. Displaying the various facets of the relationship in this way not only strengthened the couple’s bond, but also encouraged friends and family to acknowledge their partnership.
